Depp Cautiously Optimistic About Bringing Richards Onboard ‘Pirates’

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp doesn’t want to jinx the chance of Keith Richards appearing in his hit franchise’s next episode.

Though movie website IMDb (Internet Movie Database) includes the Rolling Stones guitarist in the cast list for the third film in the series, Depp – who based his now-famous Jack Sparrow character on the musician – is playing it safe when asked.

“We’re all looking forward to the idea of Keith coming in and doing a cameo, and it’s looking very, very good,” the 43-year-old actor told reporters the day after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man’s Chest, the second film in the franchise, premiered in London.

“The one thing is you just never say it’s definite until, for me, the guy steps on the set and the cameras are rolling, but it’s certainly something I’d be excited about.”

Depp received his first Oscar nomination for his off-beat portrayal of Capt. Jack in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a film that earned $654 million worldwide at the box office.

Dead Man’s Chest opens in North American theatres Friday, and the third film is due to be released in 2007.

The rocker’s London publicist couldn’t be reached to comment on whether or not Richards plans to be a part of the film.

The 62-year-old is currently preparing to return to the stage with his bandmates for the European leg of their tour.

The tour had to be delayed a few weeks after Richards had to undergo surgery for a head injury he suffered reportedly falling out of a palm tree in Fiji.
