Misunderstanding Over Bomb Scare Grounds Air Canada Flight

A Sri Lankan man and woman were taken into custody for questioning Wednesday morning after US Customs officials inspected their documents during a routine check and suspected the couple was carrying fake Canadian passports

The woman apparently became quite upset and complained of chest pains and said she needed her bag, which was on the flight.

“There was a significant language barrier with the passengers, and the male is believed to have made a confusing remark about a possible suicide bomb,” US Homeland Security Department spokesman Russ Knocke said.

The plane was on its way to Toronto when it was ordered to turn back to Rochester by the American Bureau of Customs and Border Protection “out of an abundance of caution”. The 11 passengers onboard were also removed.

Officials inspected the plane and no bomb was found. The man’s luggage apparently never made it on the flight.

The couple was still in custody Wednesday afternoon and there’s no word if they’ve been charged.
