First Adult Terror Suspect Released On Bail

Mississauga man Ahmad Ghany, 21, was released on $140,000 bail and was placed under house arrest. The suspect’s parents posted $100,000 and two other sureties put forward the remaining $40,000.

Ghany was released under a number of conditions. Justice of the peace Hilda Weiss said he must live at his parents’ home and can’t leave the residence unless he’s accompanied by his mother, father or one of his sureties.

He’s also not allowed to communicate with any of the other suspects. He can, however, go to work, school, court, hospital and his lawyer’s office unaccompanied.

Ghany’s parents embraced in the courtroom and Aly Hindy, a controversial imam at the Salahuddin Islamic Centre, was also at the hearing for moral support.

“I’m very happy, I’m hopeful you know,” he said. “Actually, not only me but even the people on the security certificates, when they knew about the release of the young guy a few days ago, they (were) also hopeful they will be released.”

A teenage suspect was released on bail last Friday under what his lawyer described as “very strict conditions.” He can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Ghany, 11 other adults and five young people were arrested on June 2 for allegedly plotting terror attacks across the province.

Ghany’s next court appearance is Aug. 28.
