Media Outlets Try To Procure The Tapes Of Mel Gibson’s Anti-Semitic Rants

But whether you’ll ever actually get a chance to see the infamous video for yourself is in doubt.

When cops stopped the actor-director on July 28th for speeding, they allege he was driving drunk. And since most California cruisers now come equipped with recording equipment, the close encounter between authorities and the inebriated star was captured on camera.

Media outlets have been attempting to get their hands on it ever since. But so far, the Sherriff’s Department won’t let it out.

“They are part of the evidence,” points out spokesman Steve Whitmore. “Once everything is done and the case is wrapped up we certainly can revisit it.”

The local district attorney claims the tapes won’t be made public unless they’re one day introduced at a trial. And given the nature of what’s on them, it’s unlikely Gibson will ever request his day in court.

But that won’t stop some from trying. Internet entertainment site TMZ has filed a court challenge, demanding the video be released to see if Gibson received preferential treatment because of his celebrity status.

“We want the tapes not just because of Mel Gibson but because the tape puts the conduct of the sheriff’s department in context,” explains site honcho Harvey Levin.

Gibson has admitted he was drunk that night and launched into a now infamous tirade against Jews, blaming them for every war and sneeringly asking the officer confronting him if he was Jewish.

The actor’s admission of guilt may mean no one will ever see the one impromptu mini-movie he never intended to make.

Gibson has been charged with misdemeanor drunken driving, but no matter what happens in court, his public punishment is bound to be far more severe. Although he’s repeatedly apologized for his comments, many believe the star’s career will never recover from the scandal.
