Slot Machine Pays Off 10 Times What’s Put In Before Glitch Detected

Even the most honest people in the world may find this story appealing to a touch of the larceny in their soul.

It took place at a casino called Caesars Indiana last month. And it was a gambler’s dream come true.

Two of the machines in the complex were accidentally giving out 10 times the amount of money bettors put in. When Kathryn Ford sat down at the machine – ironically called “Extra Money”-  she slipped a $20 bill into the slot and prepared to take a chance on a few spins.

But she was already a winner – the machine rewarded her with $200 in credits. Surprised, she tried another $20 and the same thing happened. Quickly realizing what was happening, she slipped in six more $20s and wound up with a stash of $1,600 – without ever pulling the handle.

Word soon spread among other patrons, who were falling all over each other to get a chance at the one armed bandit. “There was even a young woman who jumped in while I was sitting there. She … reached across me, popped a hundred in, popped out a thousand and then she took off,” Ford told a local newspaper.

But no one told the casino until Ford finally reported the glitch. It lost an estimated $487,000 in cash over two days before the problem was fixed.

So what actually happened? Casino officials determined that a switch in the machines was set for use in the Philippines, instructing them to multiply all credits by a factor of 10.

But now thanks – or no thanks to Ford, depending on how you look at it – all bets are finally off.

But for many inveterate gamblers, it was ‘fund’ while it lasted.
