C.N.E. Promises Lots Of Entertainment This Year

It’s been a summer tradition in the city for 128 years and the 2006 edition of the Canadian National Exhibition has all your old favourites and some new attractions that are expected to entice some one million people through the Princes’ Gates.

“This is a great place to come with your parents and your children, have some time away…Everybody gets to do something different during the day and everybody’s got a great story to tell at the end of the day,” C.N.E. General Manager Dave Bednar said.

The human cannonball is back for a repeat performance this year, as are the Super Dogs and the Flying Canucks.

And of course the air show is one of the most important parts of the historic fair.

“The highlight of this year’s air show will be the F22 Raptor showing up on Saturday (Sept. 2). It’s the latest and greatest in the U.S. arsenal so we’re pretty excited about that,” Richard Cooper, the President of the Canadian International Air Show, said.

The doors officially open at 10am Friday and the fun runs until Sept. 4th.

Here’s a look at some of this year’s main attractions:

Imaginaire: It’s winter in the August, as aerial acrobats mix amazing moves with skating. 2 & 7pm at The Ricoh Coliseum

Cirque Envol: This Quebec-based group of artists and acrobats seem to defy both gravity and belief. Afternoon and evenings at Muzik, formerly the Horticultural Building.

Daily Parade: CHUM-FM sponsors the daily procession through the grounds this year. It starts every night at 6pm. There will be fireworks after dark, too.

Flying Canucks: Ski ramps, trampolines and anything that can get these guys airborne will give crowds a lift. See them every day at the fair.

Human Cannonball: What kind of guy would let someone fire him out of a cannon every day? Dave “The Bullet” Smith will tell you.

Hollywood: The Movie Song Show: It’s your chance to relive some of filmdom’s biggest hits, with dancers, singers and highlights from the flicks, including Flashdance, Titanic and Men In Black. It will give a whole new meaning to the Sound of Music. Two shows daily, except one on Thursdays, at the Bandshell.

Toronto Music Festival: The 10th year anniversary brings the best of Hip Hop and R&B to the fair. Two days only – September 1 & 2nd.

Super Dogs: They’re back and their bark is as big as their light. See the classic canines everyday at 1, 4 and 7:30pm.

Air Show: The traditional spectacular to end the fair takes place on its last weekend. But something new has been added. For the first time in history, a U.S. Air Force F22 Raptor will fly along with the Snowbirds. Weekend of September 2-4.
