Willie Nelson Reaches A New Low In Highs, After Being Arrested For Illegal Drug Possession

Here’s something you never expected to hear – country and western legend Willie Nelson has been arrested for possession of illegal drugs.

Well, O.K., that’s not really a big surprise to followers and fans of the singer/composer.

Nelson has never made a secret of his support for legalizing pot, and cops claim he had marijuana in his possession when they arrested him during a traffic stop in Lafayette, Louisiana on Monday.

Authorities slapped a misdemeanor charge on the country crooner and four others, after they allegedly found grass and illegal mushrooms in his tour bus.

“When the door was opened and the trooper began to speak to the driver, he smelled the strong odor of marijuana,” a state police news release reveals.

A search supposedly produced 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana and slightly more than three ounces of illegal mushrooms.

But these alleged cowboy junkies foiled more serious charges when they all claimed the drugs were their own. If they’d been found in a single person’s possession, that person might have been charged with the more serious felony of distribution.

But because authorities couldn’t prove any of them were for resale, all were released with just minor citations.

Instead of impeding Nelson’s career, it’s expected it will only enlarge his legend.

The singer is known as a country outlaw who has had a few brushes with police over pot in the past. He was arrested in Texas in 1995 after police found marijuana in his car. But the charges were dropped when the search was deemed to be illegal.
