Jenea Barrett

Jenea Barrett comes by her basketball prowess honesty.

The Eastern Commerce star is the cousin of Seattle Supersonics player Denham Brown.

And she lives up to the family name.

“I think I’m a pretty outstanding player,” she notes without a hint of modesty. “I think I could do everything. It’s very easy for me. I’ve been playing ball for like the past nine years now.”

And that confidence is well deserved. Barrett is the anchor of her team and has impressed all those who’ve watched her – even though she’s only 15. She admits she was nervous the first time she ventured out with her new cohorts.

“At first I was scared but then after that I just said okay, this team likes me and I like this team,” she shrugs. “We’ve got to work together.”

Her coach is impressed, too. “Her inside presence in the key. She can score underneath the basket. She’s aggressive. She makes the basket,” enthuses Kareen Griffin. “She’s smart on the floor, a real floor leader when she can be.”

What’s the best part of her game? “Driving to the hoop. Taking it right to the hoop,” she replies, without a second’s hesitation.

Jenea wants to attend the University of Connecticut, the same alma mater where her famous cousin honed his tricks of his trade.

But in a game of 21, would she be able to beat him?

“He would win but when I get to a hoop, he wouldn’t be able to guard me,” she laughs. “He can’t touch me.”

And as a fitting Athlete of the Week, we wouldn’t bet against her.
