It’s been a trying few days in India for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
The celebrity couple is in the country to shoot scenes for a movie about slain journalist Daniel Pearl, but so far their visit has been marked by pesky paparazzi and mobs of reporters.
The couple had to cut short a rickshaw ride they were taking with their five-year-old son Maddox Sunday after being chased by the media in the city of Pune, in western India. The ride lasted only 20 minutes in the city’s downtown, and was further slowed at every red light when security men travelling with the couple would surround the vehicle to prevent pictures from being snapped.
It’s the second incident involving paparazzi since the couple flew into city by private jet last Thursday with Maddox and their two other children, 18-month-old Zahara and 4-month-old Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt.
On Saturday, a security guard for the couple got into a tussle with a photographer trying to take pictures of the couple at their hotel. The incident was caught on tape by an Indian television station and showed the guard grabbing the man by the neck.
The photographer was identified in reports as Sam Relph of Barcroft Media.
“He said if I took his pictures he would kill me,” one local paper quoted Relph as saying. “I couldn’t breathe. He had his fingers on my windpipe and he knew what he was doing.”
At least two other Indian journalists complained that they’d been threatened by the guard, who wasn’t identified.
The couple was supposed to start shooting Monday for A Mighty Heart, where Jolie plays Pearl’s widow Mariane.
The film is based on Mariane Pearl’s book about her husband and is being co-produced by Plan B, a production company Pitt founded with his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Aniston.
