A well-rested Jeff Weaver wove a winning tale on Tuesday night, moving his St. Louis Cardinals to within one game of the World Series after a fine pitching performance. The Cards, inspired by Weaver’s mastery and further bolstered by a big home run from Albert Pujols, downed the New York Mets 4-2 to take a 3-2 series lead.
Pujols’ homer gave the Cards a sense of relief as they finally put a dent in the armour of the seemingly impenetrable Tom Glavine.
“He doesn’t give in too much,” Pujols said. “I’m just glad it went out of the park.”
Weaver gave up just two runs and six hits over six solid innings.
Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter will be given the opportunity to propel his team into the World Series final when he starts on Wednesday night at Shea Stadium.
If he wins, the Cards will face the tough, almost divinely inspired Detroit Tigers.
The Cardinals got an insurance homer by pinch-hitter Chris Duncan, who sent a crowd of 46,496 into a frenzy, twirling white towels and cheering wildly for their hometown heroes.
