Humane Society Waives Adoption Fees For Christmas

Giving a loved one the gift of companionship is, in many ways, the perfect Christmas present.

And if that companionship comes in the form of an adopted pet from the Toronto Humane Society, all the better.

That’s what the good folks there are hoping, now that they’ve temporarily waived the adoption fee on all dogs and cats during the last-minute holiday crunch.

Society officials are citing some of the worst overcrowding in their history, as well as holiday cheer, as the reasons for the move. Currently there are more than 300 cats and close to 135 dogs on site and in need of a home.

“Every single person who works in our office has a few cages on their desk,” said Toronto Human Society’s Tim Trow.

“We have no board room anymore, no meeting room, our hallways are full of beautiful cats … we really need to find homes for animals like never before.”

And getting a pet for free? There haven’t been too many complaints.

“I think it’s a great thing, it brings more people in, at this time people are spending a lot of money on gifts and it gives a chance for people to say, ‘Hey, I want an animal,'” said mother Miliyana Alexander. “It gives them no excuses.”

But while the price tag’s been temporarily been removed, the adoption process one must go through remains fully intact.

So make sure if you head down to pick up a pet, you really want it and are in it for the long haul.

“We have a very strict adoption process with an excellent questionnaire and an excellent investigation that’s time proven,” promises Trow.
