Citytv Welcomes 2007

 It’s a new year.

The year 2007 comes with the new hope, new challenges and new possibilities, and in Toronto it was welcomed with the meeting of roughly 40,000 new friends getting soaked at Nathan Phillips Square.

Citytv’s annual New Year’s Eve Bash was a success as always, with hosts Dina Pugliese and Husein Madhavji entertaining the tens of thousands of people who braved driving rains to hit the party first hand, as well as the thousands more watching from their homes across Canada.

Music lovers were treated to performances including the soulful stylings of Keisha Chante and B.C. pop-punk Hedley, as well as relative newcomers like George and Measha Brueggergosman.

“This one’s for you, Toronto,” Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard screamed before one of the group’s songs. On this night, Toronto definitely deserved it.

And of course the night featured plenty of local celebrity sightings, including appearances by MuchMusic’s Tim Deegan and Sarah Taylor, Star!’s Danielle McGimsie and Sean Gehon and the one and only Ed the Sock with his sidekick Red.

And there were plenty of other forms of entertainment, including the Kiss Cam, which showed people in the crowd spreading some holiday cheer, as well as the weather itself, which came down on performers and fans non-stop, causing a sea of umbrellas to pop up amongst the throngs.

But it simply wouldn’t dampen the still sizable crowd’s enthusiasm, and when the time finally came to count down those last 10 seconds of 2006, seemingly everyone belted it out with commitment right down to the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

That most people probably wanted to get somewhere dry may have been a factor, but nevertheless when the New Year came, all was momentarily right.

The promise of a New Year is a beautiful thing.
