Cops Nab Suspect In ‘Under Armour’ Case

Police have arrested a man they believe is the ‘Under Armour Bandit.’

Joseph Vrbanac, 34, was taken into custody Friday morning by officers in Peel region. The apprehension came as Halton investigators were preparing to hold a news conference to announce a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

It’s alleged the so-called ‘Under Armour Bandit’ – nicknamed for the brand of baseball cap the robber wore during most of the incidents – is responsible for 17 heists throughout the province.

Most of the bank locations hit since August were Scotiabanks, stretching from Windsor and Chatham through to Mississauga and Barrie.

It’s unclear what led authorities to the Kitchener, Ont. man, but Det. Sgt. Bruce Chapman of Peel Regional Police said it was a joint investigation.

“Policing has no jurisdictions in Ontario. All of the police services work closely hand-in-hand in the investigation,” he said. “It was through a little bit of luck and the sharing of information between police services that (the suspect) was identified as living in Kitchener.

“All the police services have an equal share in his apprehension and arrest.”

Vrbanac is in custody in Brampton – he’s expected to face a slew of robbery charges.
