Crash Claims Four Teens

A car crash west of Collingwood has claimed the lives of four teenage boys and seriously injured two others.

The accident happened Friday afternoon on Highway 26 near Meaford. The young victims were on their way home from a cancelled hockey game when their SUV collided head-on with a van.

The victims have been identified as 16-year-old Drew Perry, 16-year-old Morgan Fitzgerald, 17-year-old Andrew McKean and 16-year-old Michael Fleming.

“Real intelligent kids, and had a great attitude when they came to the rink, no exception,” said the teens’ hockey coach Jack Martin.

“That’s what makes it so difficult.”

The driver of the SUV, 17-year-old Michael O’Hara and the driver of the van were seriously injured in the crash, which occurred during some stormy winter weather. O’Hara remains in critical condition at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

The van’s driver – 60-year-old Rodney Gibbons of Meaford – is in hospital in Owen Sound.

The five teens were all from the Town of Blue Mountains and all of them attended the same high school – Georgian Bay Secondary.

Students at the school have created a website featuring art (pictured) that remembers the four deceased teens and are coming together in an attempt to deal with the sudden tragedy.

“They’re all gathered together with some other students, and I have to say that they’re going through some tough times,” admitted Martin.

“I think they’re trying to get through it together.”
