Should Tobogganers Be Required To Wear Helmets?

Most Canadians have fond memories of tobogganing, and for the majority, it’s a fun, innocuous activity that has been enjoyed for generations.

But there’s no denying that the combination of speed and slippery conditions can end up causing serious injuries, and sometimes, even death.

In fact, tobogganing accidents have claimed the lives of seven people in Canada since 2003, and thousands of injuries.

That concern has councillors from the city of Vaughan considering making helmets mandatory for children intent on speeding down snowy hills.

“I really think it’s a very good idea,” said mom Erika Murillo.   “I think it would be better for the kids. The injuries would be less probably, or there wouldn’t be any injury.”

Despite their potential for preventing serious harm, helmets are used by only about 3 percent of sledders.

“We’re here to make sure that our kids, our community is safe. So why not take that step? Be proactive and let’s do something about it,” said Coun. Sandra Racco.

“Only if it’s one child that’s saved, this is worthwhile,” adds Coun. Mario Ferri.

The head of the trauma prevention program at Sunnybrook agrees kids should wear helmets while tobogganing, but thinks education programs should come before legislation.
