Toronto Wakes Up To More Bitterly Cold Temperatures

Here we go again.

In the same city where it seemed like winter would never arrive less than a month ago, comes another week where it seems like it will never go away.

GTA residents awoke to another bitterly cold day Monday, with temperatures plummeting into the minus 15C range at dawn. Those readings recovered a little bit during the day, but by the late evening we’ll be right back into the deep freeze with -10C and even colder wind chills.

And the conditions played havoc with the usual suspects as the work week began.

Frustrated GO Transit riders felt frozen out, after snow squalls and more switching problems caused some trains to be cancelled during the morning rush. Others were delayed for up to an hour. To check the status of your trip, click here.

On the normally fast moving 407, traffic came to a standstill for a time, after a dump truck collision forced out salters, sanders and towing equipment to clean everything up.

And the city called its third Extreme Cold Weather Alert on the weekend, as fears about the fate of the homeless in the bone chilling temperatures escalated. The move allows officials to open more shelter beds and gives those living on the street access to the T.T.C. so they can reach the heated havens.

Despite the ongoing shiver snap, the alert was cancelled on Monday.

The good news is this latest cold blast should break by Thursday, when we finally get back to normal, which around this time of year is a still chilly -2C.
