Crews Make Quick Work Of Two More Fires In The GTA

Two more fires created two more problems for crews in the GTA Tuesday.

One of the blazes took place in the Bathurst and Steeles area, after flames broke out in a seventh floor apartment at 120 Torresdale Ave. around 1:30pm.

Ambulance officials say one person suffered minor smoke inhalation and was rushed to hospital, but is expected to recover. A pot on the stove is believed to have sparked  the blaze. A damage estimate hasn’t been released.

About an hour earlier, residents at a apartment building in Oakville found themselves temporarily out in the cold after flames erupted at a 14-storey complex on Spears Road near Kerr St.

Problems in a ninth floor electrical room sparked the fire around 12:25pm and the building was evacuated. But crews quickly put it out and those outside were allowed to go back in.

A worker believed to be doing maintenance for the building has been sent to hospital and several others were treated for smoke inhalation. All the roads in the area that had been closed off have since re-opened.

These two minor blazes follow a major one on Monday. A 75-year-old woman was killed when a huge conflagration spread through her house in the Main and Danforth area.

She was found on the second floor of the residence but doctors couldn’t revive her in hospital.

Advocates say if sprinkler systems had been installed in the house, the victim would likely have survived.
