Ninth Live Earth Show Added As Event Kicks Off In Australia

It’ll feature more than 150 artists on nine international stages, and be seen by billions on TV and the Internet. Live Earth’s aim upon kicking off in Australia this weekend is to raise awareness and money for climate change. There will be nine concerts in all, including a just-added show in Washington featuring Garth Brooks and Tricia Yearwood.

Other shows are taking place in London, Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Hamburg, and East Rutherford, New Jersey. A show in Brazil featuring Lenny Kravitz and Macy Gray was suspended over security fears but is now back on.

Former U.S. vice president Al Gore, whose documentary An Inconvenient Truth helped bring environmental issues back to the forefront, is behind the event and says the concerts themselves will be as green as possible.

“These Live Earth concerts around the world, the largest entertainment event in the history of the world, are designed to promote awareness of the crisis,” says Gore. “More importantly specific awareness of the solutions and how we can solve it.”

The shows will be broadcast on television and the Internet, and it’s believed almost two billion people will be watching. Between songs by Madonna, Metallica, Jack Johnson, The Police, Kanye West, and the other acts involved, short films and public service announcements will be aired. MuchMusic Vice-President David Kines says viewers will be able to see shows from all over the world.

“Musicians have been at the forefront of many issues — apartheid in the ’80s and peace in the ’70s and ’60s,” says Kines. “This is about uniting the world and reminding everyone we’re all on the same planet. We’re pulling it all together with this concert and with this global broadcast we’re putting together on CTV to remind everybody we’re all citizens of the earth. We’ve got to look after planet earth.”

Many of the shows, such as the one in Tokyo, are featuring not just international acts but local ones as well.
