Neighbour Charged After 6-Yr.-Old Boy Dragged Behind Truck

If you ever needed evidence about the dangers of drinking and driving, look no further than Cape Coral, Florida. A boy is in hospital, a man is under arrest, and a father will forever have to live with the consequences of his actions, after a horrifying incident on a local  street.

The 6-year-old was riding in a truck with his dad, with his neighbour at the wheel. Cops allege the driver was drinking as they made their way down the road, and at some point, they stopped to relieve themselves. The dad and his friend got back in the vehicle and roared away. They got halfway down the road, before both got a funny feeling something was wrong.

And something was. The child wasn’t there, having gotten out of the cab while the adults were tending to their bathroom needs. “They looked in the back. They called for him,” recalls police spokesperson Dyan Lee. “He wasn’t there. That’s when they started to panic.” The boy somehow wound up in back of the truck and had been dragged down the road for a quarter of a mile as the pair sat oblivious in the front seat.

Three witnesses watched in horror, unable to believe what they were seeing. “One of them actually saw the child being dragged down the street and said it looked like a rag doll,” Lee recalls. The child is recovering from his injuries in hospital but is expected to be O.K. The 59-year-old neighbour has been charged with impaired driving and while the father hasn’t been accused of anything yet, authorities say charges against him are pending.
