Alleged Police Chase Leaves Two Dead

Two young men died early Saturday, after a vehicle police were reportedly pursuing crashed into a Hamilton home.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is reviewing the chase, which began when a Hamilton police officer allegedly spotted a black Mercedes speeding down Main Street shortly before 3am.

The officer followed the car for a short distance until it left the road, struck two trees and ran into a house.

“I was watching TV,” recalls Shelly Wright, who lives next door to the home the car crashed into.

“I just heard this earth-shattering bang, I thought an airplane hit my house.

“I thought the car was in my house underneath, that’s how bad the impact was.”

Two men inside the car, both 20 years old, died at the scene, while a third man was taken to hospital with a broken leg.

“I heard the heart-wrenching scream which I’ll live with the rest of my life,” Wright said. “This guy was in agony.”

The woman that lives in the home the car crashed into returned from work 10 minutes after the accident to find her front stairs dislodged from the impact.

The SIU is investigating the circumstances surrounding the police response and the collision, and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.
