Drive-Thru Killer Gets Nine Years Less Time Served

A man convicted of a brutal murder at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Scarborough last year was sentenced to 9 years less time served on Monday.

Tyler McGill, 22, was attacked while he waited for his order at the fast food joint at Eglinton and McCowan on July 29, 2007. He was stabbed nine times in an altercation with two men and died days later in hospital.

Danny Mohammed, 20, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the attack.  The defence had asked for just two years jail time, while Crown was arguing for at least a decade behind bars.  In the end he’ll serve about 6-and-a-half years.  Mohammad’s father was also arrested in this case but charges against him were later dropped.

The victim’s family felt the sentence was too lenient, and had a brief confrontation with Mohammed outside the courthouse.

“I don’t think that nine years is long enough,” said the victim’s mother, Carole McGill.  “I don’t think that 20 years is long enough. I don’t think that life is long enough. I don’t know what kind of sentence I could impose on him that would make me feel that I have received due justice.”

McGill’s father also expressed his disappointment.

“Damage done to the victims is permanent. The damage done to the people who did this to my son is temporary, and I’m just not satisfied with that.”
