New On DVD - June 23, 2009

Inkheart CityNews.ca Pick of the Week – Based on the Cornelia Funke book, Inkheart is a fun fantasy-adventure that brought back memories of the 1984 classic film The Neverending Story. When Mo Folchart (Brendan Fraser, who the character in the book was written for) reads, the characters come to life. This leads him and his daughter Meggie (Eliza Bennett) on the adventure of a lifetime in this excellent film for the whole family. Also starring Jim Broadbent, Paul Bettany and Helen Mirren. Would have been nice to see more special features on the DVD. Also available on Blu-ray. Film: *** out of 5 stars. DVD * out of 5 stars.

Confessions of a Shopaholic – Silly, silly film based on the silly, silly book series. Isla Fisher plays Rebecca Bloomwood; a woman who spends way more than she earns. A few cheap laughs, annoying scenes and a lot of unlikable characters makes this a very poor Sex and the City wannabe. The film even fails to make shopping look good (as if). Special features include deleted scenes, bloopers and more. Also available on Blu-ray. Film ** out of 5 stars. DVD ** out of 5 stars.

The Pink Panther 2 – If you enjoyed Steve Martin’s previous take as Inspector Clouseau in 2006’s The Pink Panther you’ll probably enjoy the sequel. Besides the addition of John Cleese as Inspector Dreyfus (taking over for Kevin Kline), the film lacks anything fresh and makes me long for the Peter Sellers original even more. DVD is worth picking up for the bonus disc that includes 27 original Pink Panther cartoons. Also available on Blu-ray. Film ** out of 5 stars. DVD *** out of 5 stars.
