Snoop Dogg, Akon Among Big Name Musical Acts Heading To Gananoque, Ont. For New Festival

As towns go it’s hardly a household name, but Gananoque, Ont. will play host to plenty of musical mainstays during the 1000 Islands Music Fest this month.

The event runs from Aug. 13-15 and the town of just 5,300 will greet headliners Snoop Dogg, Kardinal Offishall, Akon and Simple Plan, to name a few.

It’s all part of a community facelift, as a town traditionally marketed as quaint and safe tries to develop an edgier image by aligning itself as a potential summer stop for acts making the trek along Highway 401 between Toronto and Montreal.

This is the first edition of the event, which organizers hope will become an annual tradition built on an estimated population base of 500,000 in nearby municipalities as well as devoted music fans a few hours away in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and across the water in upstate New York.

Originally envisioned as a country and classic rock party, programmers ultimately sought a broader appeal and revised the list of target acts.

Among the others on the bill: Plain White Ts, illScarlett, Arkells, Lights, Pilot Speed, the New Cities and Faber Drive.
