City Inspectors Declare Building Unsafe After Concrete Slab Falls From Office Tower

An unsafe work order has been declared for a building in North York after a concrete slab fell from the second floor and landed in front of the rear exit.

It happened at a medical and office building at 240 Duncan Mill Road just before 9am Friday.

Hundreds of workers and patients were quickly evacuated and the tower and one next to it at 220 Duncan Mill were checked by City inspectors.

Because of fears more of the nine-metre wall will crumble, no one will be allowed back in until engineers deem it safe, which could be as long as two weeks.

The decorative slab was twenty feet in length and weighed 4,000 pounds. Luckily, there are no reports of injuries.

“I personally smoke. I spend a lot of time outside. I recommend they check this building from top to bottom,” said Gail Parsons, who works in the building.

There is a daycare on the property, but it’s not open in the summer months.

There are about 20 businesses located in the office tower.
