GTA Police Investigating Three More Bike Collisions, One Fatal

In the wake of a cyclist’s death, police across the GTA are investigating three more collisions involving bikes and cars.

One of those crashes was fatal and it happened at an intersection with separate sets of lights for TTC vehicles and regular traffic.

A 66-year-old man was cycling southbound on Spadina Avenue on Monday when he allegedly made a left-hand turn against a red light.

Meanwhile, a streetcar travelling in the same direction had the right of way.

The streetcar hit the cyclist at Nassau Street.

The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.  He died on Thursday.

On Tuesday, officers were called to McCaul Street just south of College Street at 10:24am.

When they arrived, they found a 20-year-old woman with injuries to her head and lower back.

Investigators believe that she had been cycling north on McCaul, just to the right of Toyota heading in the same direction.

She allegedly attempted to pass a Pontiac that was parked in the curb lane. That’s when, police allege, the driver of the Pontiac opened the door.

The cyclist swerved to avoid it, but was allegedly hit by the Toyota behind her.

She was knocked to the ground and emergency crews were called.

She remains in hospital in serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

Police are still looking for witnesses.

Meanwhile, a collision in Pickering has sent a 48-year-old woman to hospital with serious injuries.

It happened around 5:40pm on Tuesday.

Durham Regional Police believe that she was riding her bike on Bayly Street, heading east.

An SUV travelling in the same direction allegedly struck her, throwing her several feet.

The woman was not wearing a helmet. She was taken by air ambulance to Sunnybrook Hospital, where she was immediately taken into surgery.

The driver was not injured and the Traffic Management Unit is investigating.
