Son Charged In Murder Of Mississauga Woman

Peel Police are investigating their 14th murder of the year after a body was found in a Mississauga home.

Officers were called to Laburnum Crescent around 12:30am Wednesday for reports of an injured person.

When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from obvious signs of trauma.

Nevie Phillips, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 28-year-old son, Nigel Phillips, has been arrested and charged with murder.

A neighbour says she heard the deceased woman’s husband grieving when he discovered her body.

“I just got woken up by some screaming that I heard…unfortunately it was the husband and he was just repeating that he came home and found his wife dead on the floor and he was just hysterical.”

“She was just such a sweet loving lady, never a mean word, never a harsh word, always calm, tending to her garden.”

Police used the K-9 unit to scour the neighbourhood and found the victim’s son a few streets over.  Neighbours say he had mental health issues.  He is facing charges of second-degree murder.

“I did see some of that,” neighbour Silvia admitted, referring to the suspect’s mental health problems.  “I preferred to just avoid it because it was a personal matter.  He did seem troubled.”

Police have recovered a hammer that they believe was used as the murder weapon, and they note that they had been called to the home in the past to deal with the man now accused of murder.

Silvia says the couple had four other daughters, but the son was the only one still living with them at home.

“I’m just wondering how he is going to cope and how his children are going to cope.  I just feel so sorry for them,” she said.
