A 26-year-old Toronto man has turned himself in on charges of first-degree murder after police issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest.
Late Tuesday night, Merhawi Tekle surrendered to police, who charged him in the beating death of 71-year-old Donald Constantine Jackson. A 17-year-old girl, who cannot be identified under the Young Offenders Act, has also been charged with first-degree murder.
Officers believe on the evening of September 12, Jackson got into a verbal argument with the girl. But when he tried to walk away, the girl followed him to the Pine Hills Cemetery, where she was joined by Tekle.
Tekle then allegedly beat the man unconscious before the pair fled the scene.
Jackson was transported to hospital, but died of his injuries days later.
Tekle was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
Based on information provided by a relative, police originally said the victim’s name was Benson Smith and that he was 61. His name, in fact, was Donald Constantine Jackson and he was 71.
