Charges Laid Against Three Companies After Debris Kills Girl In Calgary

The City of Calgary has laid charges under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act against three companies after debris flew off a building under construction earlier this summer and killed a three-year-old girl.

The building is being built by Quebec City-based Groupe Germain, and the charge of allowing an unsafe condition has been filed against Germain Residences Ltd., Grenville-Germain Calgary Ltd. Partnership and Flynn Canada Ltd.

Mirsoslav Krsek, his wife, Mariana, and their children, Eric, 7, and Michelle, 3, were taking relatives from Romania to the Calgary Tower for supper on Aug. 1 when the family was hit by debris during a storm.

Michelle was hit by a piece of sheet metal while Misoslav and his son were badly injured.

Kevin Griffiths, chief building officer for the city, says the provincial act clearly indicates that owners, contractors and subcontractors are responsible for safety in and around their construction sites.
