An animal rights group is calling for a European boycott of Canadian seafood products as part of a protest over the seal hunt.
Humane Society International says it hopes the campaign convinces the Canadian fishing industry and government to stop the hunt. The group claims the commercial seal hunt is the “largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth.”
Animal-rights groups have long campaigned against the hunt, at times enlisting the support of celebrities like rock legend Paul McCartney.
Many Canadian politicians support the hunt, saying it gives remote regions an economic boost.
Despite Canada’s protests, the European Union voted this summer to ban imports of seal products. The Conservative government has vowed to appeal the decision at the World Trade Organization.
