Govt Issuing Public Cheques Bearing Tory Logo

Opposition MPs are crying foul over a binge of taxpayer-funded cheque presentations that bear either the Conservative party logo or the prominent name of the local Tory MP.

The story began with a single photo of Nova Scotia MP Gerald Keddy presenting an oversized Government of Canada stimulus cheque, but identified with a Conservative party logo.

That’s a flagrant breach of government rules under the Federal Identity Program.

Keddy’s office called it an oversight, but a second photo of the parliamentary secretary presenting another stimulus cheque bearing the Tory logo soon surfaced.

And a look at individual Conservative MP websites reveals dozens of cheque presentations on which the MP’s name and signature appears in bold letters, while the Government of Canada logo is almost invisible.

Liberal MP Wayne Easter says the massive stimulus spending push is not Conservative party dollars and not the cash of individual MPs. In Easter’s words, the public treasury is not supposed to be used “for the Conservative propaganda machine.”
