Officials Say Alberta Freelance Journalist Kidnapped In Somalia Free

An Alberta freelance journalist who was kidnapped in Somalia more than a year ago says she was beaten and tortured during her time in captivity.

In an interview with with a national news agency after her release, Amanda Lindhout says she was held in extremely oppressive conditions in a room with no light or windows.

She says as the days stretched on and ransom wasn’t paid, her captors beat her and demanded the money.

Lindhout and Australian photographer, Nigel Brennan, were kidnapped Aug. 23, 2008.

Lindhout says some money, which was raised by the two families, was paid for their release, but she doesn’t know how much.
