Rash Of Car Thefts In Leaside

At least six cars were stolen from the Leaside area overnight and it appears the thieves were targeting a specific make and model.

The thefts happened sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning near Bayview and Eglinton Avenues.

The victims have confirmed it was a Toyota Highlander that was stolen from their homes.

“We’re definitely looking at more than one person … involved in the theft of the autos,” confirmed Toronto Police P.C. Tony Vella.

One woman said she went to bed around 1am, but when she came out to get the newspaper at 7am, her truck was gone.

Police are looking at whether electronic entry codes on the vehicles were compromised.

But in a statement, Toyota Canada said the chips are state-of-the-art and that the company has never encountered such an issue.

“Toyota is confident in our vehicle security system. We have a robust system, the integrity of which has never been compromised.”

Toronto Police are suggesting SUV owners in the area utilize their garages where possible.
