PM Confirms G20 Summit Will Be Held In Toronto

The upcoming G20 Summit this summer will be held in Toronto and not in Muskoka, as originally planned, the Prime Minister announced Monday.

The economic leaders will gather in the city on June 26 and 27th, 2010. The meeting was initially scheduled to take place in, or around the Huntsville area, but RCMP Commissioner William Elliott concluded the area doesn’t have the resources to host the international event.

Hosting the G20 Summit would require providing approximately 10,000 rooms and high security for the delegates, but Huntsville has only 1,000 rooms at most.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement in South Korea, which is slated to hold a second G20 meeting in November.

The government has already spent millions of dollars on upgrades and improvement to the Muskoka area, including $11 million on the North Bay airport.

The G8 Summit will still be held in Huntsville in June, 2010.

The original plan was to host the G8 meeting at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, but since then, world leaders decided the G20 would replace the G8 as the main economic council of wealthy nations.
