Civic & Escalade Among Most Stolen Vehicles In Canada

Two very different vehicles top the list of the most frequently stolen automobiles.

The two-door 2000 Honda Civic SiR is the most popular among thieves, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, which released its annual top list of stolen vehicles Wednesday. The next auto differs greatly in both size and price: the 2003 Cadillac Escalade ESV.

“We’re seeing two very different forms of auto theft,” Rick Dubin, Vice-President, Investigations, IBC,  said in a statement.

“One type of thief is just looking for a car that’s easy to steal, with no approved anti-theft electronic immobilizer, which can be used for transportation, stripped for parts or used to commit other crimes. The other type of thief goes after newer, high-end vehicles.”

The expensive SUVs are prized among organized crime rings that ship the stolen trucks to Ghana, Nigeria, Dubai, Lebanon and other areas, chop them up for parts or change the vehicle identification numbers and sell them to unsuspecting customers.

Other models of Escalades, including the 2002 EXT, 2005 ESV and 4WD made the list in fifth, sixth and tenth place respectively.

According to Statistics Canada, 125,271 vehicles were stolen in 2008, which is a 15 per cent drop from the year before.
