Slippery Driving Conditions Lead To Dozens Of Accidents

Dozens of accidents have been reported in and around the GTA after Mother Nature delivered another morning of snowy, cold and gusty conditions.

Some reported the early commute was worse than it was Wednesday morning, when the city received its first taste of winter with a slushy snow-rain mix coating roads.

Temperatures dropped considerably Thursday — it’s expected to feel like -11C with the windchill by the afternoon — and the dusting of snow hid patches of black ice on the roads.

Several vehicles went off in ditches along the highways and a number of collisions were reported — thankfully most accidents were minor.

One serious collision involving an OPP cruiser was reported on Highway 400 at Highway 9. The police car was pulled off to the side of the road investigating another accident when the crash occurred.

“They had the left lane shut down to get the vehicle out of the ditch and then all of the sudden another vehicle came from behind and just rear-ended the cruiser,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford explained.

The officer wasn’t hurt.

Flurries are expected to continue through the day Thursday and the Barrie and Newmarket areas may see some blizzard-like conditions.
