Accused Bike Thief Igor Kenk Pleads Guilty

Igor Kenk has admitted to what many in the city suspected all along: he’s responsible for bike thefts across Toronto.

On Tuesday, Kenk pleaded guilty to 10 counts of possession of property obtained by crime and six drug possession charges, for cocaine and marijuana.

“There’s a number of factors that he had to weigh, including the strength of the Crown’s case, how much resources would have been involved in terms of them having to put the cases through the preliminary hearings and the trials…there were some concerns about immigration issues, those were also a factor,” noted defence lawyer Lon Rose.

When police raided his Queen Street West business and other properties back in the summer of 2008, officers found nearly 3000 bicycles. About a third of them were returned to their owners.

A judge ruled that the public benefited from Kenk’s plea bargain, as his business is no longer in operation and bike registration has increased significantly.

The bikes were forfeited and are now in the hands of the province.

Kenk, 50, was handed a 30-month sentence, but received credit for time spent in pre-trial custody. He will serve four months in jail.

He still faces assault charges and will return to court on Friday.
