SIU Investigating After Man Shot To Death Outside Movie Complex

The provincial Special Investigations Unit is looking into a shooting that left one man dead.

The victim, a 34-year-old Montreal man, was shot by a Toronto Police officer outside a movie theatre Sunday evening.

It happened around 7:30pm in front of the Eglinton Town Centre at Warden and Eglinton Avenues. An officer shot the man who came out of the complex and confronted police, reportedly while carrying a gun.

The victim was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“I heard two shots,” witness Geralyn Wraith recalled.

“My son sort of jumped in front of a parked car and yelled at me ‘get down, get down,’ and then I heard two more shots,” she added.

“People come here to have a good time with their families,” another movie-goer said.

“You can’t believe this would happen outside.”

Authorities haven’t revealed any details about the call that brought them to the theatre. Police said patrons inside weren’t in any danger.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police officers and civilians that result in serious injury or death.

Reports suggest the man, who hasn’t been identified, was shot four times, but officials haven’t confirmed that. On Monday, the SIU said that he had been shot “at least once.”

“The investigation will take as long as it takes to do a thorough, complete, impartial and unbiased investigation,” SIU spokesman Frank Phillips said.

The victim’s name will not be released until his family has been notified.
