Man Accused Of Killing Ottawa Cop Charged With First-Degree Murder & Robbery

The man accused of stabbing Ottawa police officer Eric Czapnik to death is due to appear in court Wednesday.

Authorities charged RCMP constable Kevin Gregson Tuesday night with first-degree murder, robbery and using an imitation firearm.

The deadly attack happened around 4:30am Tuesday outside the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. Czapnik (pictured) was there on a routine call when he was ambushed while writing up notes in his cruiser.

Four paramedics intervened during the stabbing and managed to apprehend the suspect, authorities said, at great risk to their own safety.

Czapnik died about an hour later in hospital. The 51-year-old constable leaves behind his wife, daughter and three sons. He moved to Canada from Poland in 1990 and joined the Ottawa force in 2007.

Gregson, 43, has had a brush with the law before when he threatened a church official with a knife in Regina. Gregson pleaded guilty to uttering a death threat in 2007.

He’s still formally a member of the RCMP, despite the fact he was ordered to quit his post with F Division in Saskatchewan in 2006 or be dismissed. The dismal was appealed.
