In just over a month, some voters in Ontario will be heading to the polls.
A by-election will be held in Toronto-Centre on February 4, following the resignation of former MPP George Smitherman.
Premier Dalton McGuinty made the announcement on Wednesday.
Smitherman had resigned earlier in the week to pursue his bid to become Toronto’s mayor. He had previously served as deputy premier, Minister of Health, and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure.
The Liberals are expected to nominate former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray as their candidate, while the New Democrats have chosen Cathy Crowe.
The Progressive Conservatives have not yet announced a candidate.
Under the Election Act, elections must be called on a Wednesday and held the fifth Thursday after the date of the issue of the writ.
