Baby Born At North York Gas Station

A baby made an extraordinary entrance into the world early Friday – in the snowy parking lot of a North York gas station.

A woman gave birth to a baby girl in the back of a minivan at the Esso station at the corner of Jane and Finch with some help from her family and a police officer from 31 Division, who caught the child just after 6:30am.

“[The officer] found mom with the baby’s head sticking out and before they had a chance to even prepare, even anticipate what was going to happen, basically caught the baby as it was coming out and wrapped it up with a with a warm jacket and did a great job,” paramedic Ted Kulik explained.

The little one apparently just couldn’t wait to make her first appearance – the family was just a one-minute drive away from Humber River Regional Hospital.

“It happened pretty quick. There wasn’t much time to think about anything. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” an excited Const. Neil Savary said later.

“It was pretty wild – just catch and hold on and wait for the experts.”

After birthing her baby in the chilly conditions, the mother stepped out of the minivan, barefoot on the snowy ground, before being put into an ambulance and taken to hospital with her child.

Mom and baby are said to be doing well.
