Police Considering Speed In Fatal Downtown Crash

A 37-year-old man has died after a serious two-vehicle collision in the downtown core.

At about 3:30am Sunday, police were called to the scene at King and Parliament streets, where they found two injured drivers, and debris and sporting equipment scattered across the intersection.

Officers determined the driver of a black Lincoln was travelling eastbound on King when, upon entering the intersection at Parliament, he lost control, struck a Beck taxi parked in the curb lane and rotated into a pole and bus shelter.

The Lincoln driver suffered life-threatening head and spinal injuries and died in hospital a couple of hours later.

The 35-year-old taxi driver is in stable condition in hospital.

Witnesses report seeing the Lincoln travelling at very high speeds prior to the crash and suggest he may have been attempting to make a left turn.

Police are not releasing the victim’s name until next-of-kin are notified.

It’s the city’s first traffic fatality of 2010.
