Two Suspects Arrested In Alleged Debit Card Scam

Police in Durham Region have arrested two Toronto-area men in connection to an alleged debit card scam.

Two men walked into a Subway sandwich outlet in Newcastle just before 10pm on Jan. 4 and authorities allege one of them distracted the clerk while the other switched the debit pinpad device with a decoy, rigged to record card numbers and PINs.

The next day the store owner noticed the change and looked over security video in which he spotted the alleged switch. As the owner was notifying police of his finding, he saw the two suspects enter the store and chased them. One man was arrested outside the store and the second man got away, authorities said.

Officers from the Fraud Unit managed to track down a suspect’s rental car in Toronto, executed a search warrant at his home and arrested the second suspect. Authorities claim they found evidence relating to the alleged Subway scam and a number of others at the residence.

Sonam Norbu, 21, of Toronto, and Tenzsin Gatsok, 21, of Mississauga, are facing a slew of charges, including attempted fraud over $5,000, forgery of a credit card and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on this case or other allegedly related cases to contact them at 1-888-579-1520 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
