Man Struck By TTC Streetcar

A Woodbridge man is clinging to life after he was hit by a TTC streetcar overnight – part of an unfortunate trend of pedestrian injuries and deaths in the city over the past few weeks.

At about 12:30am, the 35-year-old was crossing Queen Street East, west of Broadview Avenue when he stepped into the path of the eastbound streetcar.

He was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital with life-threatening head injuries and remains in critical condition.

Police are still investigating but say the victim was jaywalking and talking on his cell phone at the time of the incident. His next-of-kin has requested that his name not be released.

A couple of hours later, at around 3am, another man was struck, this time by an SUV at College and Bathurst streets. The 23-year-old sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

And a pedestrian was rushed to a trauma centre in serious condition after being hit at Dixon Road and Carlingview Drive later in the evening.

On Saturday night, a 25-year-old woman was injured when she was hit by a vehicle near Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue.

And on Friday, another three people were struck, one fatally. A 57-year-old man on crutches died after he wound up in the path of a dump truck while crossing the road at Broadview and Danforth avenues.

“We’ve got a lot of things happening. It’s a very busy city … and pedestrians have to keep their eyes open – even if they have the right of way – and make sure they can cross the street safely,” Sgt. Weinstein of Traffic Services said on Sunday.

So far this year, 12 pedestrians have been killed by vehicles on GTA roads.
