The union representing Ontario college employees has set a strike deadline: Teachers could walk off the job on February 11, ending classes for 200,000 students in the province.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union made the announcement on Monday. OPSEU represents about 9,000 instructors at 24 colleges.
Last week, after several days of negotiations, Ontario’s College Compensation and Appointments Council put the deal on the table Wednesday, but OPSEU shot down the offer.
Management has requested that the union let its 9,000 members review the deal and put it to a vote. It claims the latest offer was the best one yet because the contract is shortened to three years instead of four and offers higher salary increases.
Just over half – 57 per cent – of teachers voted in favour of a strike mandate earlier this month.
