Glen Murray Elected MPP For Toronto Centre

Dalton McGuinty can breathe a sigh of relief now that Liberal Glen Murray has won the byelection to become the MPP for the Toronto Centre riding.

The former mayor of Winnipeg came out on top Thursday night with almost 47 per cent of the vote.

“I think people are starting to understand this government is getting elected because it’s working hard on real issues for real people,” Murray said at his victory party.

It was a fairly close race between Murray and the NDP candidate, well-known street nurse Cathy Crowe. She finished with just over 33 per cent support.

Lawyer Pamela Taylor was in the race for the Tories, Stefan Premdas, for the Green Party.

Murray replaces former MPP George Smitherman, who resigned last month to run as Mayor of Toronto. He held the seat in Toronto-Centre for the past 10 years.

“It’s really an honour and a privilege being able to represent the people of Toronto Centre once again,” said McGuinty.

“We want to continue to work as hard as we can. I think the priorities remain the same – good schools, good quality health care, a strong economy that’s generating good jobs and helping to support a caring society.”
