Residents Allowed Back In Following Carbon Monoxide Scare In Liberty Village

Residents of a high-rise apartment building in Liberty Village have been let back in to their building after  high levels of carbon monoxide were detected early Thursday.

The CO detectors in the building at 80 Western Battery Rd., near King and Strachan, went off just before 5am. The concentration of the gas sparked the alarms when it hit 50 parts per million.

Emergency crews began evacuating the 14th floor of the building, but it soon became clear more residents would have to leave.

Just after 6am officials detected the source of the problem and downgraded their response shortly after. A rooftop vent in the building had collapsed due to high winds.

“You can’t take any chances with carbon monoxide,” said Norm Clements, platoon chief at Toronto Fire.

“It’s a very dangerous gas that’s undetectable. The people in the building probably had no idea that the levels were rising.”

Some of the evacuated residents were sheltered inside TTC buses and others were moved to the building next door. Residents have since been allowed to return to their units. No body was injured.
