Police Trying To Track Down Suspect In Fatal Hit & Run

The driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run this week may still be at large but that motorist left behind some important clues that have helped investigators narrow their search for the suspect vehicle.

A 34-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle around 10pm Thursday night on Stouffville Road, east of Yonge Street.

The victim lost control of his BMW, which ended up in a ravine on the south side of the roadway. The man and his passenger — a 30-year-old woman — got out of the car and walked up to the gravel shoulder to use their cellphones and call for help. Police say that’s when the suspect vehicle, travelling east, hit the man.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman wasn’t hurt.

The suspect car left behind debris, including the antenna, passenger side mirror and a piece of trim. Investigators believe the vehicle they’re looking for is possibly a 2001 to 2005 Chevrolet Venture van. Authorities believe this van has extensive damage to the front passenger corner and possibly, the windshield.

Investigators are appealing for tips from the public and are asking people in the auto body repair industry to contact them if they work on vans that fit their description.

If you saw what happened or have any information call York Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7704 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
