NDP Accuses Ontario Liberals Of Hiding True Impact Of HST

The controversial harmonized sales tax is once again under fire.

The provincial New Democrats are accusing the Liberals of hiding the true cost of the HST.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan told the legislature last week that he didn’t know the impact of the 13 per cent sales tax on the cost of gasoline.

But NDP leader Andrea Horwath says that the Ontario government has studies that show the effect the HST will have on energy costs.

Duncan countered in the legislature on Tuesday, saying the NDP are taking comments that are not only out of context, they’re from undated documents

Last month, the NDP acquired documents from the ministry of finance that outline how the HST will affect household energy expenses.

Ontarians will have to shell out an extra $225 a year for the utilities once the Liberals’ harmonized sales tax takes effect on July 1.

The New Democrats filed a freedom of information request for those government papers seven months prior to the information being released.
