No Frills Cashier Collects $20.6 Million Lotto Prize

Canada has at least two new millionaires after this weekend’s massive Lotto 649 draw.

Bonnie Preece, an employee of Gary’s No Frills in London, won $20,664,574. She brought coffee and doughnuts to her coworkers before heading out to Toronto to claim her prize Monday.

Preece said she had only $80 in savings when she decided to splurge on the ticket.

“I don’t usually play the 649 because I was a little cheap on the two dollars,” she said on Monday.

She plans to look after her family and friends and then dedicate some cash for people in need.

“It couldn’t have happened to a better person, heart of gold,” a co-worker said.

Her boss had a slightly different story.

“Maybe there will be a change of ownership and she’ll be telling me what to do,” Gary Coyle said with a grin.

The other ticket was purchased in Edmonton. Saturday’s jackpot was $41 million.

The biggest single ticket win in Ontario was $40.5 million in Nov. 2008 and the largest-ever jackpot was $53.3 million, which was split between 17 people in Canmore, Alta. in 2005.
