Man Charged With Assault On Parking Enforcement Officer

A man has been released on $10,000 bail following his arrest for an alleged assault on a parking enforcement officer.

Panagiotis Merris, 44, surrendered at 55 Division on Monday evening although he maintains his innocence.

“It’s his position he’s been falsely charged. And we’ll see what happens in court when it comes to trial,” defence lawyer Peter Thorning said Tuesday.

Merris is accused of hitting the officer in face after he received a ticket on Sunday. The alleged assault occurred near Danforth and Carlaw avenues.

The officer, a five-year parking enforcement veteran, fell to the ground. He was taken to hospital and treated for a concussion.

“He was out cold. There was no movement at all from him. He was just out, you know, for about half an hour,” said witness Peter Panagakos.

The accused allegedly drove away, but not before a witness snapped a picture.

Merris is charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and dangerous operation.

As a condition of his release, Merris must stay away from Danforth Avenue, take anger management classes and is prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
